Best way to capture enemy engineers?
« on: December 26, 2007, 03:01:05 AM »
Every now and then it'd be nice to have the enemy tech, and I'm thinking of what would be the best way to capture enemy engineers. I wonder, I haven't tried it, but you can pick up enemy engineers with the transport aircraft, can't you? Then it'd be an easy task to drop it in a safe place with say, a sizeable bunch of own engineers to capture the poor bastard...

In TA you could pick up enemy units with a transport. Sadly this doesn't work in either Supcom or FA. Don't know how hard it would be to code either.

Its true, you can't transport enemy units.  I'm not sure if we can alter that fact or not - or if we even should.
As far as capturing enemy engineers, I suppose you could make a template of wall segments that forms a ring and build it around engineers that are building mexes unattended.  If your opponent notices then you might get your engineer captured instead.

Recon did you change the rate of capture in ATW mod for any units at all?

Remind me of having fun transporting enemy commanders and Ctrl+K

Actually it was CTRL-D. ;)
And no, I haven't changed it but maybe I should?  I wonder where that code is located...

give the cybran a tiny buff to their capture rate... they are the guerilla faction.

I was doing a capture with a T2 engineer on a T1 enemy engineer and thought the process was slower. May be it was my misjudgement.

In my opinion there should be enough time for an engineer to capture another engineer within the time required to build a point defense.

Honestly I've never even explored it.  I did notice early on that reclaiming enemy units is a heck of a lot faster than capturing.

GPG really lost vision on this one :(
There's a function in the unit class that allows you to change the rate at which a unit is captured.
So I'm thinking "great!!" but when I try and us it, it doesn't work.
It only works when the unit is created it seems.
So I can alter the rate at which a unit is captured.  But I can't seem to get it to capture at different rates depending on what is capturing it!!
I'll try a few things but its not looking good.

aww, this makes me sad.

You quoted me *after* I deleted my post??  How'd you manage that one?

I got it working.

Now I'm trying to get the Hives to auto capture but it seems GPG has hard-coded the capture distance to a maximum of 10 (really short).
I managed to get them to auto capture stuff within that distance, but chances aren't very high of enemy units showing up in there.
So.... I gave them an ultra high capture rate.  ;D  If enemy units get real close, they're yours (probably)

I'm writing my own capture routine.
Its able to capture at whatever range I set :D

I got it sucking energy and calculating capture time and showing the capture beam just like the original function.
I don't have it playing the sound or showing the progress bar yet.  Still working on those.

Nice

Capturing is a niche tactic but when you are successful you can get quite an advantage.

For example, cybran shields are crap. But if you can capture a seraphim engineer you are all set.

UEF really lacks an air experimental but if you can capture say cybran, aeon or seraphim engineer and be able to hide it you can bring element of surprise.

It's a great tool to use the faction diversity as a disadvantage upon the opponent.

I was playing against the AI and my large groups of Hives were capping enemy engies (it kept saying I had 20 engies that I didn't build doing nothing) and I was like WHAT THE SH*T IS GOING ON!?!?!?!? Then I realised and I lol'd hard
